When is the Best Time of Year to Move?

<<< back to article list

If you have a choice of when you will be moving, there are some factors to consider when deciding when to move, according to the editors of Movers North America, North America’s most informative on-line moving information website.

Obviously the first consideration when determining when you should move will be the weather. Ideally you want to move on a day when the temperature is moderate (not too hot, not too cold), and the chance of precipitation (rain or snow) is light.

In the northern United States and Canada that would make the months of May and June, and September and October the ideal months to move, avoiding the heat of the summer and the possibility of snow or inclement weather. However in most cases a summer move is not a problem. Professional movers are prepared for the heat.

If a warm or cold weather move is planned, it’s a good idea to have lots of cold drinks available (water, Gatorade) for the movers. They will bring their own, but they will appreciate having cold drinks, and you will get better service!

Hot chocolate and other warm drinks are great for a winter move. The movers will bring their drinks with them, but again, it will be easier for you to prepare something hot for them.

While weather is one factor in deciding when to move, another factor to consider is the time of year. Everyone wants to move during the good weather, so that’s the time of year when movers are the busiest. Because they are the busiest, you pay a premium for moving at that time of year. If you can move during an off peak time, you will save money.

It is also true that most people want to move on a Friday or Saturday, so that they don’t have to take as much time off work, and so that they have the weekend to unpack and get settled after the move. Again, you will pay a premium for a weekend move. If possible, plan your move for early in the week. You will save money, and get better service.

A final factor to consider will be the impact on your family. If you have young children in school, it is often best to move during the summer school break, so they can start in their new school at the start of the school year.

In summary, the perfect time to move is when the weather is good, movers are not as busy (during the week or at off peak times) and when you can get your family settled at the beginning of the school year.
